I don't know if you have any idea how much your flowers mean to people. How many people who receive flowers act like my mother and shed a tear and how many give you a hug like my father? You bring a lot of happiness in the world by translating what people feel into something others can hold onto and see and smell (and taste, I guess if they wanted). There were all these bouquets of flowers around my mother's hospital room where she's recovering from chemotherapy, and it was easy to tell which ones came from you. They were the best-looking, the best color, the best quality. You could really tell the difference looking at all the rest of them. My father died after a long bout with cancer. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make any sort of arrangements, so my husband did most of them. Looking back, I could see that he was upset also, and he’s not exactly the arbiter of taste that he thinks he is when he’s in the right frame of mind. So when the flowers arrived for the funeral, I was struck by how understated and tasteful they were, entirely appropriate for the occasion. AAAAARRRGHHHH! I write to you to tell you that on my latest birthday present to my friend, who lives in Ireland, I used a different florist. This is a strange story, I know, but I had to get flowers not just to an address, but to a specific location within that address. Worst of all, it wasn't marked anywhere. My cousin is a stand-up comedian, and the flowers for him were for his first steady gig in L.A. They had to be right off-stage behind the curtain so as he came off, the flowers would be presented to him in his hands. My God, I can't believe they were there at just the right time. I was nervous as a cockroach at a tap-dance contest, but everything worked out OK. My uncle's death was very hard on my cousin, his daughter. I'm glad I was able to give her a little indication that there were people in the world who cared about her and what she was going through.
