I visited my father in the hospital this morning and was stunned to see that my flowers had arrived before I had. I know I had asked them to be delivered in the early morning, but really! He was already enjoying them, saying they reminded him of my mother and when I was a baby. We both had a good cry. I admit I was nervous about ordering from an Internet company. But everything turned out OK. Better than OK, actually. I'm telling you this because the flower arrangement that I sent to my mother is still going strong after all these weeks. She has called me just about every other day since then. To tell you the truth, I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But she mentions the flowers every time. They're just so impressive. The wonder of flowers! My neighbor and I had been feuding for months, ever since my sycamore allegedly dropped all of its leaves onto their vegetable garden. It escalated from there, and one point the common fence was on fire. (Don't ask.) Anyway, my wife of all people, sent them flowers and then boom, it was over. As a society, we tend to send flowers out of feelings of guilt for not being in a place we would normally be. Before the advent of automobiles and airplanes, we wouldn't stray too far from home (except in a few cases), and so we didn't have a need for sending gifts through the mail, or the Internet, or using FTD, or some other wire service. But we are products of our times, and because even nuclear families are so far flung, and because husbands and wives often live and work on different continents from one another, we have this need to send gifts to one anther in lieu of being there. What we're acknowledging is that we usually do what we can to make compromises between how we would like to live and how we would like to be close to one another. It's apparently socially acceptable to be apart like this as long as we can send each other things that remind us of this emotional connection even though there's no physical connection.
