My father died after a long bout with cancer. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make any sort of arrangements, so my husband did most of them. Looking back, I could see that he was upset also, and he’s not exactly the arbiter of taste that he thinks he is when he’s in the right frame of mind. So when the flowers arrived for the funeral, I was struck by how understated and tasteful they were, entirely appropriate for the occasion. I was a doubter at first, but all my doubts were dispelled this last Christmas, when I hesitantly made a huge order (over $1000) of flower displays, arrangements, and bouquets for the company Christmas party. It's a small company, so I wasn't sure if it would just add to the frivolity of the occasion or if it would be worth it in terms of employee cohesion. Well, it turned out to be both. My mother visited for a short time last spring, and she noticed something completely new, for her anyway. She noticed that there was this celebration called Mother's Day that everyone takes so seriously. The “broken heart” flower stand arrangement was just perfect for my brother’s funeral. He died after a long, lingering illness, so it wasn’t a shock, but we wanted to think of it as an end to his suffering.
