My mother visited for a short time last spring, and she noticed something completely new, for her anyway. She noticed that there was this celebration called Mother's Day that everyone takes so seriously. Now she demands that she be treated like an American mother and have flowers and cards and calls and gifts sent to her. All this so she can say that her daughters in America recognize that she is an American mother by proxy or something. I admit I have a problem about this. I am out of control. Flowers sent to people as get well presents who have nothing but a common cold. In almost all cases, the flowers last much longer than the illness. But it's so easy and it makes everyone feel so much better, even when they're feeling miserable. This year's flu season wasn't quite as bad as last year, but still many people got flowers from me just because they weren't feeling well. This may sound a little silly, but I hope it doesn't. My best friend's cat died over the weekend, and I couldn't think of anything to do for her being so far away with work and all. The best thing I could think of was to send a nice sympathy bouquet. I know how close she was to that cat, and I didn't really know how to say that in words. It seems strange to me that here in the tropics it can be trouble to find some kinds of flowers. But it's just like up there in the US with tropical flowers. The flowers I sent to my son and daughter-in-law for a congratulations on purchasing a new house actually got there. I mistakenly sent them to the new house address without thinking about escrow and even move-in time. I couldn't be there in person because I'm overseas, so I had to suffer through a night of thinking, "what did I forget?" It didn't hit me until my son called to say they were very appreciative of the flowers I sent. It was then that I remembered giving the wrong address on the form, and I became more confused because they actually got delivered to the right place. I'm bursting with pride at my kids being able to afford houses and I'm also red in the face because I can't even figure out where they are now!
