Though I am far away from my friends, it's nice to know that I can let them know I am thinking about them in a time of sadness and loss. Flowers are so much more tactile and have more substance than cards or electronic messages, like they are stand-ins for you. I was dead set against the frivolity of having flowers at my father’s funeral. He detested frivolous things of any kind.
