I don’t know if you know how hard it is to find a consistently good florist. Back in the 1980s, there was a flower delivery service associated with a department store that has since been swallowed up by a larger company. I think that flower delivery company was the only one that could match yours in terms of quality, price, and promptness. Of course, they’re gone now, but you’re still here. We had a combination Christmas and Chanukka this year, so we had arrangements of blue and white flowers intermixed with arrangements of red and green flowers, just like our family. I thank you for putting some joy into the life of one of my closest friends. Sadly, she passed away from cancer recently much too young. The flowers that were delivered to her hospice always brightened her day no matter what her mood was. I tried to visit with her as often as I could, but busy lives often get in the way of such relationships. The flowers she received had no such problems, though. She often said that it was as if I were there, and she would talk to the flowers as if they were me. My father died after a long bout with cancer. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make any sort of arrangements, so my husband did most of them. Looking back, I could see that he was upset also, and he’s not exactly the arbiter of taste that he thinks he is when he’s in the right frame of mind. So when the flowers arrived for the funeral, I was struck by how understated and tasteful they were, entirely appropriate for the occasion. The funeral for my uncle Saul was done during a week after the burial. I didn’t know this at the time, when I ordered the flowers. I found out too late, and I tried to think of every excuse I could to get those flower arrangements out of there at some point because I knew they would be, shall we say, not quite so fresh. But much to my amazement, they lasted the entire week. Even after the end of the week, my aunt took one of the white roses and put it in a vase before they removed the funeral arrangements.
