My father died after a long bout with cancer. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make any sort of arrangements, so my husband did most of them. Looking back, I could see that he was upset also, and he’s not exactly the arbiter of taste that he thinks he is when he’s in the right frame of mind. Every year, I've sent my wife roses for Valentine's Day. This year, I decided to do send something different. You know, just because. I still sent all red flowers, but just not roses. My father hates everything. Since my mother died ten years ago, he's been a terrible grump. I think it was hard on him more than anyone else. I had never given him flowers before, but I thought, what the heck, you know? His house is so dark and masculine. On their anniversary, I was over at his house when they were delivered.
