I have dealt with certain delivery companies before who could not handle a slight discrepancy in the address with any smarts at all. It seems like if two numbers in a zipcode are transposed, it stops them in their tracks and they delay a couple days and charge you half again as much. I admit that I sometimes get zipcodes wrong. My memory isn’t what it used to be. But someone over there recognized the mistake I made on a flower delivery and it didn’t slow them down a whit. This is a strange story, I know, but I had to get flowers not just to an address, but to a specific location within that address. Worst of all, it wasn't marked anywhere. My cousin is a stand-up comedian, and the flowers for him were for his first steady gig in L.A. They had to be right off-stage behind the curtain so as he came off, the flowers would be presented to him in his hands. My God, I can't believe they were there at just the right time. I was nervous as a cockroach at a tap-dance contest, but everything worked out OK. Though I am far away from my friends, it's nice to know that I can let them know I am thinking about them in a time of sadness and loss. Flowers are so much more tactile and have more substance than cards or electronic messages, like they are stand-ins for you. It's something they can move around and focus on in order to get the kind of feeling that I hope I would provide were I there. I visited my father in the hospital this morning and was stunned to see that my flowers had arrived before I had. I know I had asked them to be delivered in the early morning, but really!
